Arlanda Airport in Stockholm is the main international airport serving Sweden. It is situated in the province of Uppsala, about 23 miles north of Stockholm in the municipality of Sigtuna. The airport originally opened to limited service in 1960, and all long-haul flights were quickly moved there from the smaller Bromma Airport near downtown Stockholm. About nineteen million passengers transited the Arlanda Airport in 2011.
The airport has three asphalt runways, the longest being almost 11,000 feet. Arlanda has four terminals, with terminal 5 being the largest. Most international and all charter flights depart from terminal 5. SAS Scandinavian Airlines maintains lounges for Star Alliance members at terminals 4 and 5. At the center of the terminal complex is Sky City, offering many shops and restaurants plus the railroad boarding area.
Airlines with a major presence at Arlanda Airport include SAS Scandinavian Airlines, Nextjet and Skyways. Cargo City is a cluster of air cargo warehouses on the south side of the airport. Nearby are large aircraft maintenance facilities. Three hotels are within Arlanda, plus at the entrance there is a retired Boeing 747 that has been converted into a hostel. Over thirty restaurants are inside the terminals and Sky City, as well as over thirty stores. There is parking across from the terminal as well as short and long-term lots.
Arlanda Express high-speed trains provide ground transportation between Arlanda Airport and central Stockholm. Railroad service also connects Arlanda with the city of Uppsala. Bus service runs from the airport to Uppsala and the town of Enkoping. Bus lines that connect the airport to central Stockholm make several stops in Stockholm County along the way. All taxis have a fixed rate from downtown to the airport.
